Former US President Donald Trump has denied charges by the Commission of Inquiry about the storming of the US Capitol in a multi-page document. Trump accused the committee Monday night (local time) of making “judiciary a laughing stock” and barring the acquittal of witnesses. In the 12-page letter, which also includes a number of footnotes, Trump reiterated his baseless accusations of electoral fraud and fantasies of electoral victory.
He accused Democrats and US President Joe Biden of destroying the country. “The Democrats (…) are doing everything they can to stop me, but we are unstoppable,” he said.
“Lost contact with reality”
During Monday’s second public hearing of the Commission of Inquiry, several high-ranking people close to Trump had strenuously contradicted his accusations of voter fraud. Former members of the administration and campaign advisers have clearly distanced themselves from Trump’s actions. Former Attorney General William Barr and others called Trump’s cheating allegations “insane.” Barr said Trump seems to have lost touch with reality.
Reappraisal of the Capitol Attack and Voter Fraud
To this day, Trump claims without evidence that he was stripped of victory in the 2020 presidential election through electoral fraud. Opposition to the election results culminated in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, which the Congressional Commission of Inquiry is working on. For months, the Commission of Inquiry questioned hundreds of witnesses behind closed doors — including Trump’s daughter Ivanka — and reviewed vast amounts of documents and evidence. The panel is now making its findings known in a series of public hearings. Some Trump confidants, such as former chief strategist Steve Bannon, refused to cooperate with the committee.
