Democratic Senator Robert Menendez was found guilty Tuesday in a corruption trial (see video above) after he allegedly accepted bribes from Egypt and Qatar. Menendez has had several legal problems.
During a search of his home, investigators found $480,000 (equivalent to €440,084.35) in cash and gold bars worth $150,000 (equivalent to €137,731.50). The US senator, who has served since 2006, is accused of acting as an unregistered “foreign agent” for Egypt in exchange for bribes. The 70-year-old is said to have supported US military aid to Egypt and protected the interests of businessman Wael Hana.
Woman also charged
In the Qatar case, the New Jersey senator is accused of helping businessman Fred Daibes secure millions in investments from a fund. Menendez had pleaded not guilty. His wife, Nadine, is also set to stand trial starting in July. Another businessman involved in the alleged corruption cases has pleaded guilty and is cooperating with prosecutors.
The politician was previously accused in 2015 of receiving private jet flights, lavish vacations and more than $750,000 in illegal campaign contributions as bribes, but the case was dropped.
The term expires in November
The verdict in the corruption trial, which began in May, was not yet known Tuesday night. Menendez has so far resisted calls to resign. During his term, he rose to chair the influential foreign policy committee. But that is set to expire in November anyway.
