US President Joe Biden has renewed calls for a ban on assault rifles following the assassination attempt on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, using a rifle often used in mass shootings.
In the attack on Trump, the shooter used an AR-15, Biden said at a campaign event in Las Vegas, Nevada. So many people, including children, have been killed with this weapon. “It’s time to ban them.”
Efforts to impose stricter gun laws have failed for years — largely because Republicans oppose them and the gun lobby fiercely opposes any efforts to more strictly regulate gun ownership.
Assault rifle commercially available
The semi-automatic AR-15 is externally almost identical to the M16 assault rifle that the manufacturer Colt sells to the military. The AR-15 is the civilian version. Unlike the military version, continuous fire with this weapon is technically not possible. Experienced shooters can still fire many shots in a very short time.
Such a weapon does not weigh much. It is offered by different manufacturers in different versions, which means that the firepower of the guns varies. On the website of one manufacturer, it currently costs around 1000 dollars (920 euros), depending on the version.
