Drama in Styria – fire chief waited for hours on the wall

The Upper Styrian municipality of Thörl is currently experiencing major storm damage. The local fire chief experienced anxious hours on Wednesday night and was suddenly trapped in the flash floods: “Luckily I only suffered a few bruises.”

The chief of the fire brigade of Thörl, Lukas Ebner, experienced dramatic hours on Wednesday night. While the young father of the family was exploring the situation on the way to the scene of the damage, he was suddenly surprised by enormous amounts of water.

“Suddenly there was a flash flood. I saved myself against a wall, two streams were flowing past me on my left and right,” Thörler reports to the “Krone”. He clung to a lantern, the water was up to his knees. “I had to wait almost three hours until a driver from a private loader rescued me.” Fortunately, Floriani only suffered some bruises on his legs from the washed-away debris. The operations manager did not give himself a break: he was still on duty the whole day.

In addition to the district of Leoben, Bruck-Mürzzuschlag was also badly hit by the storm on Wednesday night, especially the communities of Thörl and Aflenz. The Feistringbach became a raging river, the destruction is great, people had to be rescued.

The fire brigade will be operating on a large scale for days. The anxious gaze is constantly directed to the sky; the threat of storms is not over yet. Heavy rain was also predicted for Thursday evening.
