Puente confirms that “the Vitoria option is the most plausible” to link the TAV to Navarra

Date:

The Ezkio option, according to the Spanish Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, “presents us with both technical and operational problems.”

The high-speed train connection between the Basque Autonomous Community and Navarra remains a mystery. The two options already known remain on the table: the connection via Vitoria-Gasteiz or the one via Ezkio. Although without going into details, the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility of the Spanish Government, Oscar Puente, has today opted for the Alava option, ensuring that today “is the most plausible option“.

During a visit to Pamplona this Thursday, the Minister of Transport and Public Works indicated that they “must work” on defining a connection of the TAV with Euskadi, although he acknowledged that the Ezkio-Itsaso section is causing them “problems”.

Puente stressed that no “hydrogeological studies” are being carried out because they are not “authorised by some city councils, or even by some individuals”, which, he said, “makes it difficult to take this into account.”

Moreover, according to him, the Ezkio-Itsaso option would force them to “reverse gear upon arrival at a specific point to provide the service,” which he said “technical complexity, including time“.

That is why the Minister of Transport and Public Works of the Spanish Government believes that the most “plausible on paper” option is that of Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The councils of Álava and Gipuzkoa were divided

In response to the words of Minister Puente, the spokesperson for the Gizpuakoa Provincial Council, Irune Berasaluzehas assured that he maintains his position and that the Ezkio-Itsaso option It’s “a country bet”.

A few days ago, the general deputy of Gipuzkoa, Eider Mendoza, already showed her concern because the Vitoria-Gasteiz option was gaining momentum to connect the “Basque Y” with Pamplona, claiming that the connection via Ezkio-Itsaso would shorten the journey between San Sebastián and Pamplona to 25 minutes, in addition to being an option with less impact on the landscape.

Berasaluze has announced that they are waiting for a meeting with the Secretary of State for Transport, José Antonio Santano, at the request of the Provincial Council, but that they do not yet have a date.

The two TAV options for his arrival in Pamplona are still being studied and the final decision should be announced this month. As the mayor of Ezkio-Itsaso, Joseba Tellería, confirmed on Radio Euskadi at the beginning of the month, no one is approaching them to consult them, pointing out that “everything is still up in the air”.

For his part, the deputy general of Álava, Ramiro González, assured that he is “very calm” as he believes that the technical reports will bet on the capital of Álava.
