Austrian MEP Thomas Waitz has been appointed agriculture spokesman for the European Greens in the EU Parliament. The politician said in a press release that he would also coordinate the Agriculture Committee.
In this role, he is responsible for “negotiations on dossiers, the agenda and coordination with other groups”. According to his own statement, his demands for the agricultural sector are “cost-covering food prices, a fundamental reform of EU subsidies and support for the transition to environmentally and animal-friendly agriculture.”
Currently, “money is being poured into large-scale industry and factory farming.” Other priorities include pesticide reduction, healthy and resilient forests and soils, animal protection, including animal transport, as well as animal welfare labeling.
Organic farmer and forester
Waitz is an organic farmer and forester in Styria and has worked in the European Parliament on and off since 2017. He was second on the Greens’ list for the European elections, but received significantly more preferential votes than top candidate Lena Schilling. As a result, he took over the leadership of the delegations in Brussels and Strasbourg instead of her.
