Fish farm destroyed – epidemic threat after storm: Federal army in action

Date:

This week’s devastating storms also hit a large fish farm in Kalwang, Upper Styria, hard. The collection of around 250 tons of fish carcasses is underway and there is a risk of an epidemic. Around 40 Bundeswehr soldiers are now helping with the clean-up work.

As reported, the heavy storms of the past few days have left a trail of destruction in parts of Upper Styria. The well-known Igler fish farm in Kalwang was particularly badly hit. More than a million trout and salmon trout died in the mud.

This is not only a personal tragedy for the family business, but also a potential danger to people and the environment, as the decomposition process is rapid at these temperatures.

Therefore, the Austrian Armed Forces sent the 2nd Anti-Aircraft Battalion to Kalwang to provide disaster relief. The approximately forty soldiers help to clean up the destroyed fish farm because there is a risk of an epidemic.

More than a million fish carcasses weighing about 250 tons must be collected and removed before decomposition progresses further. As the Ministry of Defense announced on Friday, the operation is expected to last until Saturday.

In addition to the operation in Kalwang, the Federal Army and the 1st Pioneer Battalion will also remove the accumulated driftwood from the Hirzmann Dam reservoir, as there is a risk of the dam breaking. Three pioneer boats and a truck with a crane and twelve soldiers are in action. This operation could be completed on Friday, but if there is more rain, the relief work could extend to Saturday or Sunday.
