A strange taxi theft took place in Salzburg on Friday night. Two drunk men (aged 23 and 29) asked a taxi driver for water, he got out and the men sped away in the vehicle. An accident in neighboring Bavaria caused the taxi ride to end abruptly…
At 03:57 on Friday evening, the operations center in Rosenheim, Bavaria, received an emergency call via an automated eCall system after a traffic accident. When the patrol arrived on the B305 near Ramsau near Berchtesgaden, there was only an Austrian taxi in the right lane. Driver or passengers – none.
When investigating the scene, the fire brigade eventually found a slightly injured person behind a pile of wood. Only a short time later, the emergency services found another person near the Wimbachbrücke bus stop. Both men did not cooperate and did not provide any information about why they were there. After clarification on the scene and with the police in Austria, it became known that the taxi involved in the accident was stolen.
Damage of 10,000 euros
It soon turned out that two young men – 23 and 29 years old from neighboring Berchtesgaden – were getting a ride home after visiting a branch in Salzburg. One of the men asked the taxi driver (60) for water. After the taxi driver stopped to get a bottle of water from the trunk, the passenger got into the driver’s seat and they both drove off towards Bavaria. The taxi driver’s mobile phone was in the vehicle and so he could not immediately alert the police.
The two drunk men drove too far to the left in a right turn near Ramsau and hit the wooden guardrail. The impact caused damage to the entire left side. The damage amounts to 10,000 euros.
Men threatened with repercussions in Germany and Bavaria
The car also had a dashcam that filmed the interior of the car. This made it possible to determine which of the two men was driving the taxi. After their identity was established and the complaint was recorded, the men were released because they lived in Germany.
An investigation was opened at the Traunstein Public Prosecutor’s Office for endangering road traffic due to alcohol consumption and a collision.
Meanwhile, the taxi theft is being prosecuted by the Austrian authorities.
