The U.S. health agency CDC has confirmed two additional cases of bird flu in humans. The virus emerged in workers at poultry farms in the U.S. state of Colorado who came into contact with infected poultry.
A week ago, Colorado reported four confirmed infections of the H5N1 bird flu virus.
Team sent to Colorado
The CDC said Monday it had sent a nine-member team of experts to Colorado to help local authorities assess the outbreak and human cases of infection.
Virus can mutate
Scientists fear that contact with the virus on poultry and dairy farms increases the chance of the virus mutating, bringing transmission between people closer.
The US government has given US biotech company Moderna $176 million (€161.62 million) to advance the development of its bird flu vaccine.
Poultry and dairy cows infected
H5N1 avian influenza is currently spreading worldwide among wild birds and is also infecting poultry and several mammal species, including dairy cows. Genetic studies have confirmed that the risk to the general population from avian influenza remains low.
