The chaos surrounding the Ryanair flight from Mallorca to Klagenfurt was almost lost in the hustle and bustle of global IT problems. Some were trapped in the heat, others waited for hours in vain.
Clocks stood still at many airports around the world on Friday – the mass strike “oops” paralyzed IT systems. Klagenfurt Airport was also briefly affected. “Check-in for the flight to Palma de Mallorca was done manually,” airport spokeswoman Barbara Schmoczer-Kuchling explained in response to a “Krone” request. “With us, everything worked again after a short time.” But for the many travelers to Mallorca, that did not mean they could board the plane.
“There was a delay in the flight from Palma to Klagenfurt due to a technical problem,” the spokeswoman confirmed. This delay was so long that the plane did not take off at all, but remained on the ground. According to reports from passengers, an engine had failed and they had to wait for hours in the plane for information – in extreme heat and without food from the airline.
Waiting and feeling uneasy
After hours they were allowed to leave the plane, while the disappointed people waiting in Klagenfurt also left the airport area. “Until 22:15 there was no announcement, no information from the airport. We returned home after five hours and then flew from Vienna on Sunday,” say readers of “Krone”. “We heard from fellow travelers about the chaos in Mallorca. We had a bad feeling when we heard about the defective engine. In the end we were glad that the plane did not come because we did not want to fly with it.” They do not know whether they will get the extra costs back.
