US presidential candidate Donald Trump is seen as a critic of arms aid to Ukraine. Now Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has tried to make a rapprochement via a telephone conversation and congratulated Trump on his candidacy.
Zelenskyi wrote on X that he had condemned the attempted assassination of Trump and had agreed to a personal meeting.
Trump said on his Truth Social platform that the phone call with Zelensky was “very good.”
Trump wants to ‘bring peace’
As president, he will “bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives,” Trump said, adding that both sides — Russia and Ukraine — would come together and negotiate a deal that would end the violence and pave the way to prosperity.
Trump has previously stated that he would end the war in Ukraine after an election victory in November – before he officially takes office in January.
Last year, Trump said in an interview that Ukraine may have to give up territory to achieve peace.
