Well-intentioned is the opposite of well done! That became clear on Saturday afternoon in St. Lorenz am Mondsee (Upper Austria). A father (37) is said to have shown his daughters (10 and 7) how to drive a car. But an accident immediately occurred. The car broke down and both girls were seriously injured.
The practice session began around noon on Saturday on the private field next to the family home in St. Lorenz. The 37-year-old left his 10-year-old daughter in the driver’s seat and sat in the passenger seat. The driver’s 7-year-old sister sat on the right in the back seat.
Pasture gate open
After the practice run, the father got out and opened the pasture gate, whereupon the ten-year-old suddenly released the clutch and stepped on the gas pedal.
Based on the evidence, police conclude that the car’s wheels were spinning first. When it then hit the asphalt, the car crashed forward into the wall of the house. Both front airbags deployed. The impact was apparently so severe that both girls were injured.
Broken jaw
Apparently, at least one child hit his head on a solid object and had to be treated for a suspected broken jaw. The Red Cross and the police were called to the scene of the accident and the injured children were taken to the Salzburg State Hospital. But there was no danger to life, it was said.
Legal consequences
The extent to which the father is confronted with the consequences will become clear when the circumstances of the accident are finally clarified. Such “driving courses” on private property are in principle legally permitted if this property is apparently not open for use.
In other words, if it is fenced or fenced off. However, if these can be used “by everyone under the same conditions”, private roads also become public and fines follow.
