In the so-called Dior bag scandal, South Korean First Lady Kim Keon Hee faced a judicial hearing on charges of bribery and alleged file manipulation.
As the responsible prosecutor’s office announced on Sunday, the presidential wife, who had sparked strong criticism in her country by accepting a lavish gift, was questioned “face to face” on Saturday. The South Korean opposition had previously called for a special investigation.
Video recordings as evidence
The scandal was sparked by a hidden camera video: The recording, which was released last year, shows Kim apparently accepting a $2,200 (just over 2,000 euros) handbag from French luxury brand Dior — violating a law that prohibits government officials and their spouses from accepting gifts worth more than $750.
Kim had been in the public eye before: during her husband Yoon Suk-yeol’s presidential campaign, she had to apologize for using false certificates.
