In Lans near Innsbruck, spectacular scenes unfolded on Saturday afternoon: after a thief was caught red-handed in a farm shop, the owner tried to lock the perpetrator up. But the suspect managed to free himself and escape. Neighbors also started the chase, running and sometimes on bicycles…
Shortly after 3:30 p.m., the 26-year-old owner saw an unknown man tampering with the cash register in her farm shop and apparently fishing for money. The woman immediately informed her husband, who was in the building directly next door.
Owner wanted to lock up perpetrator
“The 34-year-old then immediately went to the farm shop and closed the door. He wanted to keep the suspect in the shop until the police arrived. However, the unknown man managed to force the door open,” the researchers say. The owner then tried to hold the perpetrator, but he was able to break free and flee towards the village center.
The unknown person was only able to steal a double-digit amount of euros. And he lost this money when he fled.
The 34-year-old owner gave chase and warned the neighbors by shouting loudly. They then also chased the perpetrator – “some on foot, some on bicycles,” the police continued.
Arrest and confession
Eventually, the suspect was caught in a field and arrested. The suspected perpetrator – a 40-year-old Pole – was arrested. “During an initial interview, he confessed,” investigators explain. He is reportedly at large.
