The Vice President of the United States will still need to find support to secure the nomination at the Democratic convention in August.
Following Biden’s announcement that he will step down as a presidential candidate, the… election campaign committee of the President and the Vice President, Kamala Harrisha This Sunday formally amended the documents with the Federal Election Commission to consolidate the president’s withdrawal from the White House race in favor of Harris. Not to mention, she will still need to muster the necessary support to secure the nomination at the Democratic National Convention next August.
“Vice President Harris is now a candidate for President of the United States in the 2024 election and will henceforth conduct campaign activities solely in pursuit of that position,” the document reads, according to US television channel CNN. The Biden-Harris campaign funds, which amount to $95.9 million (approximately 88 million euros), can only be used by the Democrats if Harris wins the party’s nomination due to Electoral College rules.
Joe Biden surprised the international scene this Sunday after announcing his renunciation of his candidacy for the presidency of the United States. With a statement shared on his social networks, the current President of the United States thus revealed his difficult decision and placed his trust in Vice President Kamala Harris to become the new opponent of Donald Trump, who celebrated the surrender.
However, the decision is not in Biden’s hands, but despite the fact that key Democratic figures have yet to express their support for Harris, such as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, former Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi or former President Barack Obama, other figures have done so.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has assured that “there is no one better” than Harris to defeat the “dark vision” of former President Donald Trump, whom he accuses of “putting democracy and our future at stake,” while numerous members and former members of the Democratic National Committee have submitted a letter urging voters to vote for Harris and also praising Biden for “all he has done and continues to do for the country and the world.”
The Democratic Convention delegation from the state of Tennessee even voted unanimously to support the current vice president.
After Biden dropped out of the presidential race, the White House told CNN that the decision had nothing to do with the president’s health, all just days after he assured that he would reconsider his candidacy if his medical team recommended it.
In fact, he has not undergone any new medical tests in recent days beyond those necessary to treat COVID-19, whose symptoms are already beginning to subside, according to a document published by his doctor, Kevin O’Connor.
