A 46-year-old hiker from Hungary got lost on Sunday while descending Eisenerzer Reichenstein after choosing an alternative route using a mobile phone app. A helicopter rescue was not possible due to wind and thunderstorms, which made the mountain rescue team very demanding.
On Sunday around 22:00, an emergency call came in from a hiker who had gotten lost during the descent from Eisenerzer Reichenstein (Leoben district) and could not continue. The Alpine police and mountain rescue services immediately started a search.
At around 23:15 the man was found on a steep and impassable hiking trail at over 1,600 meters above sea level. At that time the region was hit by thunderstorms and it was very windy. Rescue from the air was not possible.
The rescue took over three hours
The mountain rescuers tied the man up and brought him down into the valley. The difficult rescue operation lasted more than three hours. The severely exhausted hiker was taken to the LKH Leoben for evaluation.
