A complex rescue operation in Salzburg on Sunday ended well for two Americans. The duo got into trouble while hunting for mushrooms in the mountains, and one man nearly fell.
According to the mountain rescue service, the two Americans climbed in the Napfetzer area at over 1,500 meters above sea level in the south of the Steinernes Meer in extremely steep, rocky and partly vertically sloping grass and tree terrain.
A 68-year-old slipped, fell and luckily got stuck in a tree directly above a vertical rock face.
Help arrived via a rescue helicopter. Two mountain rescuers descended about 40 meters and found the injured man.
“He was crouched by a tree, under a cliff. Right in front of a vertical rock face. That it came to a stop there was nothing short of a miracle,” said Bernd Tritscher, operations manager of the Saalfelden mountain rescue service.
