The 2024 hiking season is already in full swing in Austria. This also means that some mountain enthusiasts overestimate themselves and their abilities. If you can’t go forward or backward, the only option is to call the mountain rescue service and then rescue by helicopter. In Lech am Arlberg (Vorarlberg), three Belgians also had to be rescued on Wednesday afternoon.
Three men between the ages of 24 and 26 planned to hike from the Formarinsee to the Göppingerhütte and on to Lech on Wednesday afternoon. When they did not venture any further on the hiking trail on the south side of the Johannesköpfe because of the steepness and the old snowfields, the three decided to leave the trail, according to the police.
The path became increasingly steeper
They then climbed further up to a rocky bar. When the path there became even steeper and more impassable, the three hikers dared not continue and called the emergency number.
“Dragonfly” had to come to the rescue
The men eventually had to be rescued by the police helicopter “Libelle” using rope and flown to a nearby hut. The hikers were all unharmed, the director announced.
