Ex-girlfriend murdered – Italy: Life imprisonment in ‘Giulia case’

Date:

In Venice, the trial of one of the most sensational murder cases of recent years ended with the suspect being sentenced to life imprisonment. The Public Prosecution Service had charged 22-year-old Filippo Turetta with the kidnapping and murder of his ex-girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin. The verdict is not yet final.

Biomedical engineering student Turetta was arrested on November 23, 2023 on a highway near Leipzig after a week-long escape through Austria. In court, Turetta was found guilty of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in November 2023 and dumping her body in a ravine near a lake in the Friulian province of Pordenone.

Numerous stab wounds on the victim’s body
Numerous stab wounds were found on the victim’s body, many on her arms, which prosecutors say is evidence of the woman’s desperate attempt to defend herself.

Protests in Italy for the protection of women
The case caused an uproar in Italy and also led to numerous protests from women’s rights organizations. Following the young woman’s murder, Italy’s parliament passed a bill strengthening protections for vulnerable women and survivors of gender-based violence.

The package of measures includes increased monitoring of men who engage in domestic violence and an increase in staffing levels in relevant facilities.
