After receiving iPhones, tablets and bulletproof vests, our police officers will soon hit the streets with electric tasers and light modules for their weapons.
Most of us have seen videos of Taser deployments. When nothing else works and someone cannot be calmed or subdued during an official action, it is already in use. The device, known in the industry jargon as the Taser electric impulse weapon, has been in use by the special units Cobra and WEGA since 2012.
It has been used there 400 times so far. In the future, patrol officers will also use it, the country’s police leadership announced on Thursday.
Crime hotspots are advancing
From August 1, 150 officers at the two crime hotspots Keplergasse, Praterstern and also in Floridsdorf will be equipped with Tasers and trained in the use of the weapon, which is equipped with projectiles.
Michael Takacs, director of the Federal Police, emphasized the intensive training required. Brigadier General Ernst Albrecht pointed out that the Taser is not a miracle weapon, but in certain situations it provides a head start of several seconds.
Light modules for service weapons are also being tested
In addition to the Taser, light modules for service weapons will also be tested this summer in Vienna-Favoriten, St. Pölten, Graz and at Schwechat Airport (Lower Austria).
The new lights attached to the barrel of the weapon are intended to improve freedom of movement during operations. Here too, several manufacturers are being tested.
