The Austrian rural youth, Minister of Agriculture Norbert Totschnig, the Federal Gardens, the Chamber of Agriculture and the Innovation Farm attracted a lot of attention with a solid scythe mowing campaign for the Gloriette in Schönbrunn. Your goal: to draw attention to the important role of local farmers in biodiversity in meadows, pastures and fields.
During the scythe mowing campaign for the Gloriette in Schönbrunn, Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig proved to be a committed player. “You have to be in good physical condition,” Minister Totschnig admits to krone.tv. “To be able to do this all day, you need good training and a smart meal of bacon, cheese and bread. Otherwise you won’t get far.”
Biological diversity
The Minister of Agriculture emphasizes Austria’s leading role in protecting biological diversity. In an interview on krone.tv, Totschnig describes the current situation: “We have a special position in Austria. Our agri-environmental program, in which 80% of farmers participate, makes us one of the most ecological countries in Europe. 27% of the area is farmed organically, which is top class.”
Totschnig further emphasizes that Austria can designate almost 10% of its total area as a biodiversity area with the latest programs and area expansions. “Here too, we are doing well in Europe,” the minister said.
Incentives for sustainable agriculture
But how can this diversity be further protected and promoted? Totschnig has a clear answer: “We create incentives for farmers to participate. With the last budget resolution, we launched an incentive program that adjusted the premiums to inflation. The program is successful and is leading to even greater participation this year.”
