Driver assistance systems are intended to make driving safer, but a recent study on lane departure warning systems, distance warning systems, etc. shows that the technologies can promote driver inattention – and therefore pose new safety risks. Of the fourteen systems tested, only one received an acceptable rating.
Partially automated vehicles are not self-driving – even though some manufacturers would have you believe this with terms like ‘autopilot’. The human driver still has to perform many routine tasks, monitor the performance of the assistance systems and be prepared to intervene if necessary.
Although most driver assistance systems take some safety measures to ensure that the driver is and remains focused, recent research shows that these are often not sufficient or can be easily circumvented. Of the fourteen systems tested, only one received an acceptable rating, two systems received a ‘borderline’ rating and eleven systems received a poor rating.
