Challenging operation for the main fire station in Villach and the fire brigades in Perau and Turdanitsch-Tschinowitsch: Several lithium-ion batteries had caught fire in the basement of a house.
The concerned resident noticed the smoke development shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday and called the fire brigade’s emergency center. When emergency services arrived at his home in the Perau neighborhood, he explained that several lithium-ion batteries had caught fire in the basement.
Equipped with respiratory protection and a thermal imaging camera, a team went into the basement to investigate and with a fire line to fight the fire. “Immediately after the stairwell, the room where the fire broke out could be located,” says Harald Geissler, commander of the main fire station in Villach.
Charred leftovers were kept refrigerated
Other respiratory protection teams removed the scorched battery debris from the basement and placed it in a vessel filled with water for further cooling. Geissler: “High voltage battery fires are a major challenge for emergency services because they can still react after extinguishing and catch fire again,” Geissler explains.
No one was injured by the fire. The toxic fire smoke was blown out of the basement by powerful fans.
