Austrian drivers in Italy can be happy. Fines cannot currently be sent to Austria. The reason is the unilateral termination of the European license plate transmission system.
In Merano, South Tyrol alone, more than 4,000 traffic fines worth 230,000 euros could not be sent to so many German, Austrian and, most recently, Dutch drivers because these three EU countries blocked access to the data. For months, it has not been possible to request information about German and Austrian cars via the EUCARIS system, which enables the EU-wide exchange of vehicle and driving licence data.
Austria blocks exchange due to technical issues
The reason given is that there are technical shortcomings in the Italian system. For Italy, access to it was therefore blocked. The problem also affects the government in Rome.
Salvini promises a quick solution
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini assured during a question time in parliament that the data from Austria, Germany and the Netherlands will soon be accessible again for Italy on the EUCARIS platform. The minister spoke of technical problems that need to be solved.
