He had been in the spotlight of the authorities for decades. Next to him was Joaquín Guzmán, one of ‘El Chapo’s’ sons. They are accused of, among other things, manufacturing and trafficking fentanyl.
The United States on Thursday arrested Ismael “el Mayo” Zambada, leader and co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, who the Justice Department said had been wanted by U.S. authorities for decades and had offered a $15 million reward.
Joaquín Guzmán López, one of the sons of Joaquín ‘el Chapo’ Guzmán, was also arrested along with Zambada.
The department explained that both men “face multiple charges in the United States for directing the cartel’s criminal activities, including its deadly fentanyl production and smuggling networks.”
“Fentanyl is the deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced, and the Department of Justice will not rest until all cartel leaders, members, and associates responsible for poisoning our communities are held accountable,” the text reads.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), for its part, indicated that ‘Mayo’ “will soon appear in court in a United States court.”
