Today, 230 years ago, the Jacobin Reign of Terror, the second phase of the French Revolution, ended in France. Does that even matter? Unfortunately, it does, says author and scholar Christian Mähr.
July 27, 1794 was not yet called that in France. It was called the “9th. Thermidor of the Year II” – the so-called revolutionary calendar, which was introduced in 1792, was applicable. Twelve months of thirty days, plus five or six leap days, spent in special republican celebrations. This was also necessary because there were no more weeks, but three “decades” per month; only every tenth day was a day of rest, and not every seventh as before. All church holidays were also canceled.
