Out of concern for the safety of its employees, the parcel service DHL no longer delivers shipments to an apartment building in Duisburg, Germany (state of North Rhine-Westphalia).
The delivery was “unreasonable” for the employees, according to a DHL spokeswoman. “There are repeated threatening birth situations there.” She did not provide details. Several German media such as WDR reported on it earlier.
The high-rise, known as the “White Giant,” has 320 apartments spread over 20 floors. According to Duisburg police, the number of advertisements at the address has been low so far this year compared to the high population density at the address. There is no security problem, a police spokeswoman said. “The figures, data and facts do not confirm this.” However, she admitted that there is generally a “dark field” – that is, possible crimes that victims do not report.
Unusual step
DHL’s local delivery stop is considered unusual. The company’s spokeswoman is currently not aware of any other cases in Germany where DHL is avoiding an address to ensure employee safety. Anyone living in the Duisburg high-rise and expecting a DHL package should have a notification card placed in their mailbox. They can then use the card to pick up the package at a post office.
However, competitors continue to deliver. Door-to-door deliveries are still offered in the high-rise buildings, a DPD spokesman said. A GLS spokesman admitted that there are “challenges” in parts of Duisburg. Only specially trained drivers who can cope with the conditions are deployed there. The DPD spokesman, in turn, reported that there were “continuing insults and hostility, including threats of violence against delivery personnel” throughout Germany.
