The aftermath of Typhoon Gaemi has caused flash floods in China, killing at least 15 people. A single-story residential building in Hunan Province was swept away by a landslide early Saturday morning.
Six people were injured by the landslide. According to Chinese state television, the building destroyed was a guesthouse. In Shanghai, a deliveryman was killed by a falling tree on the same day. 27,000 residents in the northeast of the country were forced to leave their homes due to heavy rains and hundreds of factories were temporarily shut down.
Nearly 300,000 people were transported to safety in Fujian, southern China, and some train services in neighbouring Guangdong province were disrupted by the storm.
Two missing people
Typhoon ‘Gaemi’ has so far caused at least fifteen deaths in central China. Two people are still missing. The past few days have seen chaos and destruction in the region. In Taiwan, 800,000 homes were temporarily without power and at least ten people have died.
‘Gaemi’ also raged in the Philippines, claiming at least 34 lives. In addition, an oil tanker carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial heating oil sank, some of which leaked. The typhoon’s tailwinds have been classified as a tropical storm since Saturday, and there is still an increased risk of flooding in some regions of China.
