In the English port city of Southport, a “scene from a horror movie” took place on Monday. An attacker attacked primary school children with a knife during a dance event. Two victims did not survive the bloody crime. The suspected perpetrator is a 17-year-old boy who is in custody.
“It was horrible, I could hear the screams,” a witness told Britain’s ‘Sun’, describing the unbelievable scenes that took place during a ‘dance and yoga workshop for Taylor Swift fans’ at a dance school. The assailant reportedly entered the building wearing a black hood and stabbed the children without warning.
Two children killed, nine injured
Two did not survive the attack, nine other children and two adults who had tried to protect the children were taken to a local hospital with serious stab wounds. According to police chief Serena Kennedy, who described the incident visibly, six victims are still in critical condition.
As British media reports, rescuers who arrived at the scene were also surprised by the scenario. “I saw rescuers crying as they fought for the lives of the children,” a witness told the Times.
The 17-year-old rode to the crime scene in a taxi
A short time later, a 17-year-old was arrested and a knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was seized from him. The boy is believed to be originally from Wales, but lives in the neighbouring town of Banks. He was seen travelling to the scene in a taxi.
The suspect is currently being questioned, Kennedy reports. The motive for the crime remains unclear, but a terrorist background is currently being ruled out.
Royals and politicians “shocked and appalled”
The royal family has released statements, as have Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other senior politicians. “My wife and I are deeply shocked by this terrible incident. “We send all our prayers, sympathy and condolences to the families of those who so tragically lost their lives,” King Charles wrote.
“As parents, we cannot begin to imagine what the families and friends of those killed and injured in Southport are going through. We send them our love, thoughts and prayers,” Prince William and Princess Kate posted on X.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer thanked the rescue workers and said he too was “shocked and devastated”. His thoughts are with the families and victims.
