Wave of retaliation rolls out – Israel gets serious: Hezbollah targets under fire

Date:

The Israeli military said it struck several Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on Tuesday night, killing a pro-Iranian militia fighter. Also hit were “an arms depot, terrorist infrastructure, military facilities and a rocket launcher.”

Israel also struck two Syrian air defense bases Tuesday night, activists said. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported two missile attacks on targets in Daraa province. The strikes were launched from the Golan Heights, which Israel has annexed, and there were no casualties.

“Difficult answer” after football field massacre
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened a “harsh” response after Saturday’s deadly rocket attack on the Golan Heights. Israel and the US blamed Hezbollah for the attack. According to Israeli information, at least 12 children and teenagers between the ages of 10 and 16 were killed when the rocket hit a soccer field. Hezbollah denies responsibility for the attack.

Syria is also in the spotlight again
The Iran-backed militia has been fighting alongside President Bashar al-Assad in Syria’s civil war for years. The Observatory said on Sunday that pro-Iranian groups and Hezbollah-linked fighters had evacuated their positions in the area around the capital Damascus and in Syrian-controlled parts of the Golan Heights in anticipation of “possible Israeli airstrikes.”

Erdogan threatens to invade, Israel calls for NATO exclusion
On the diplomatic level, Israel’s recent conflict with Turkey is coming to the fore. Following threats from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz has called on Turkey to be excluded from NATO. “Erdogan has made Turkey a member of the Iranian axis of evil,” Katz said Monday night. Turkey is host to the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas. Katz called on all NATO members to “expel Turkey immediately.”

Erdogan had previously threatened Israel with military intervention. “Just as we entered Nagorno-Karabakh, just as we entered Libya, we will do the same to them,” he said at an AKP event. In the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Turkey supported Azerbaijan with drones, among other things. In Libya, Turkey is on the side of the internationally recognized government and is helping with military equipment and personnel.
