The 68-year-old Styrian from the Murtal district undertook his tour in the Vellacher Kotschna near Bad Eisenkappel on Monday. “His destination was the Seeländer Sattel and the Velika Baba,” the police explained. “Because the man did not return to his place of residence in the evening, his wife reported his disappearance around 7 p.m..”

Emergency services then began searching for the 68-year-old. “As a result of a mobile phone direction finding and the search flight with the police helicopter, the man was found around 8:30 p.m. in the steep terrain below the summit of Velika Baba,” police continued.

“The man probably tripped while descending the narrow and unsecured path,” police explained. He then fell about 100 meters over steep, rocky terrain, sustaining fatal injuries. The rescue helicopter C11 could only confirm the death of the hiker.

The victim is likely a well-known Dragon pilot
The hiker is probably a retired Bundeswehr officer, Colonel. Doro Kowatsch act. Federal Army spokesman Michael Bauer posted today on X (formerly Twitter) that he had a fatal accident on the mountain. Kowatsch is probably known to the public because he brought the first Draken to Graz in 1988.

“According to the information, it is very possible that it is him. He was 68 years old and lived in Seckau,” Bauer explains when asked by Krone. “He was a very nice and funny guy, always cheerful. It is tragic, but you never know when fate will strike.”

On Tuesday, a woman died in the Carinthian mountains: the 52-year-old tripped while descending from Schareck and fell about 50 meters over rocky terrain. Her husband, who saw everything, called the emergency services. But for the woman, all help came too late.
