A florist from Wels was left in a vegetative state for six years after a beating. Her Serbian husband attacked her in May 2018 at her workplace – a flower shop next to the Wels Clinic – after she had separated from him. The 38-year-old has now succumbed to the consequences of her extensive injuries.
The case made national news at the time. The Serbian came to Wels’ flower shop where his wife worked as a florist shortly before closing time on May 7, 2018. The then 32-year-old mother of an eight-year-old daughter had previously divorced the 30-year-old after he had allegedly repeatedly physically abused her. The man apparently did not want to accept the divorce.
Open skull fracture and brain injury
He beat the woman in the shop until she stopped moving. The florist suffered an open skull fracture and brain damage. The man then calmly left the shop and waited for the police. He was arrested in January 2019 by the regional court of Wels and found guilty of attempted murder and dangerous threats.
Because he was not guilty at the time of the crime due to chronic paranoid schizophrenia, according to forensic expert Adelheid Kastner, he was sent to an institution for mentally abnormal offenders, where he remains.
Never wake up from a coma again
The injuries sustained in the attack were so severe that the victim never woke up from his coma. As is now known, the now 38-year-old woman died in her care facility on Sunday, presumably as a result of the long-term effects of the crime.
On Thursday, the victim will be said goodbye in the blessing hall of the city cemetery of Wels and then escorted to his final resting place. “You were love, you were loyalty, you were kindness, you were strength, you were everything to us,” the grieving relatives write on the page about the deceased.
