After the devastating explosion in Vienna-Ottakring, detectives try to shed light on the dark background of the crime.
It all started relatively innocently: Initially, several uniformed officers drove to the later crime scene on Klausgasse in Vienna-Ottakring because neighbors reported a man throwing objects out of the window. But minutes later, the alarm bells went off at the police. The arriving officers heard several gunshots. The entire area was immediately cordoned off.
The negotiations were in vain
Special units from Cobra and WEGA also arrived at the scene every second, and professional rescue and fire brigades also took up positions – on the corner of Thaliastrasse. Negotiators tried for hours to get the 47-year-old Serb to give up through the apartment door – in vain! The perpetrator even turned up the volume on the television.
When voices of possible additional victims were heard in the apartment, the order was given to gain entry! The explosion was so violent that even windows across the street were broken. Despite the violent explosion, the man ran towards the police with an object in his hand, possibly a knife or a blank gun.
The police confiscated their weapons
They used their firearms to defend themselves. The perpetrator fell dead. Whether he died from a bullet or ultimately as a result of the gas explosion (which he caused himself) is the subject of the investigation. A total of 19 people were injured.
