Thousands of people are at risk in Sudan after heavy rains and flooding, the UN refugee agency UNHCR reports. Hundreds of families have been forced to flee floods in the eastern state of Kassala in the past two weeks.
Among those affected are many who had previously fled fighting in neighbouring regions.
Since April 2023, a bloody power struggle has been raging in Sudan between de facto ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
Ten million people displaced
The conflict has led to what the UN says is the world’s largest refugee crisis, with more than 10 million people displaced or fleeing, many of them repeatedly. The country is also facing the threat of famine.
More rain is expected in the coming weeks, and the already tense supply situation is likely to worsen, especially in the Darfur region.
