Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin, who was described online in July as “Europe’s coolest head of government”, is now coming under pressure from another party video (see above). This time, the 36-year-old can be seen dancing up close and personal with Finnish pop star Olavi Uusivirta at a Helsinki club.
It was only Thursday that a video was released showing the head of government celebrating, dancing and singing with friends. Some Finnish journalists claim to have heard statements about drugs in the video. Marin said she drank alcohol that night but was not aware of any drugs being used. “I haven’t done anything illegal,” she said.
Now we’re talking about the dance with Uusivirta: The two keep touching each other’s shoulders and hips. For a moment, the musician leans forward as if to whisper something in her ear. Some want to see a kiss on the neck in it – even if it’s not obvious.
At a press conference on Friday’s debate in Helsinki, the leader of the Finnish Social Democratic Party (SDP) said she could not remember being kissed on the neck. She thinks Uusivirta wanted to tell her something. “I think these things are part of my personal life. And I won’t go into detail about them,” said the married Marin, adding that she doesn’t think anything inappropriate is happening in the video.
‘Nothing inappropriate has happened between us’
Uusivirta also responded to the recording via Instagram on Friday. “There has been public speculation about the nature of the relationship between me and Prime Minister Sanna Marin. All I can say is that we are friends and nothing inappropriate has happened between us,” he wrote (see tweet below).
Discussions about the appearance of Marin
The first party video, which showed Marin at a private party with several friends, had sparked a discussion in Finland – especially on social media – about the prime minister’s public appearance and a possible violation of her official duties.
It also raises the question of whether the head of government should have had an official representative at the celebration a few weeks ago, during which she said she drank alcohol. Shortly before that, Marin had said she’d returned from her vacation early for an appointment. That is why, according to the government, no representation was planned on that day.
Prime Minister made drug test
After the criticism related to the private party, Marin said he had taken a drug test. The result is expected in about a week. “I’ve never used drugs in my life,” Marin told reporters on Friday. “I really wish people wouldn’t say these things without proof.”
Many of her compatriots reacted calmly to the behavior of their prime minister. “The prime minister can get drunk,” Elli Kojola of Tampere told radio station Yle. “But she also has to be careful how she presents herself. There is always someone who sees you.’ Marin said on Friday that she had received “a lot of encouraging messages” from people.
