A devastating fire destroyed countless boats, homes and cars in a small harbor on the US East Coast. The massive fire broke out Friday afternoon (local time) in the port city of Mattapoisett in the US state of Massachusetts for reasons unknown, US media report.
The cause of the inferno was unclear. It was also initially unclear whether there were any injuries. Photos and videos (above) showed huge plumes of black smoke and burning boats.
“We heard explosion after explosion. There must have been about 50 explosions within an hour,” one resident told a local TV station. According to the port’s website, it is a dockyard dedicated to pleasure craft – technicians would be carrying out repair work there.
The National Weather Service had warned of an increased fire risk in the area due to drought and strong winds.
