The LAB union has today announced the Report on occupational accidents in 2022 that you elaborated In the presentation, they denounced that occupational health has declined in the Basque Country, while the number of work accidents has increased. General Coordinator Garbiñe Aranburu has stated that “this situation is directly related to the eco-social crisis and precarious living conditions”.

The first conclusion presented in the report presented by them concerns accidents at work. The union ensures that the number will have increased in 2022 and “as a result, the number of deaths will also increase”. According to the calculations they made, there were almost 85,000 accidents at work in Hego Euskal Herria (including fatal, serious, minor and non-absenteeism accidents).

Drawing attention to fatal accidents, according to data in the report, 65 people lost their lives while working in the Basque Country and another four while working abroad. The union reports that these figures have increased “significantly” since 2014: from 39 to 69.

In terms of sectors, according to LAB, the forestry sector is proportionally the deadliest in our environment. The report ensures that 4 out of 1,000 people laid off in this industry died in 2002. Therefore, LAB concludes that this industry is “15 times more deadly than the construction industry, second in the ranking.” Industry and transport also fall under the critical sectors.

In addition to the accidents, the union has focused on the occupational diseases. LAB has denounced that this is “the biggest scam to exist in the
world of work”.

According to the data in the report presented today, the number of occupational diseases has increased to 4,284 in Hego Euskal Herria in 2022; 2,965 in the BAC and 1,319 in Navarre. According to the calculations of the trade union center, there were 276 people who died from this type of disease.

After presenting the data, General Coordinator Garbiñe Aranburu believes that “the right to health at work is violated every day”. He considers it essential to analyze the causes of occupational accidents and to focus on the causes of occupational diseases. He believes that “avoiding these occupational health losses should be a priority”, but that “workers’ lives today are of less value to employers than their benefits”.

The union has shown its intention to step up union action to demand effective measures and fight insecurity.
