Unknown perpetrators blow off steam in a fence in the Steppentier Park in Pamhagen (Burgenland). They opened a grid, six porcupines escaped. The search for the escapees is now underway. One of the escaped rodents has already been discovered and captured.
The park in Pamhagen covers 13 hectares and is a refuge for 50 animal species. Children are especially happy with visits. However, the idyll is cloudy. The porcupine that disappeared almost two weeks ago a year ago has escaped again – and with it five other porcupines.
evildoers at work
Common offenders had opened the bars of the rodent enclosure. That should have happened on Whit Monday, says zoo operator Johann Acs. Shortly thereafter, at least six animal residents had disappeared. Passers-by or drivers repeatedly reported sightings of the runaways.
Spotted an outlier
Only one missing porcupine has been found so far. The rodent had made himself comfortable under bales of straw between Wallern and Apetlon. With the help of a zookeeper, Acs managed to capture the porcupine. The whereabouts of the other five are unknown. “They’re hard to spot in public,” Acs reveals.
Search only at night
The search starts again every day around 10 p.m. If the hour is late, the chances of tracking down the runaways increase. Because it is much quieter in the villages during this time, the shy porcupines dare to come out. Acs: “I hope we have success soon.”
