Former Japanese Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba will become the country’s new Prime Minister. The 67-year-old won Friday’s elections as the new leader of the ruling Liberal Democrats (LDP).
This sets the stage for him to take over the position at the top of the government.
The LDP has a clear majority in parliament, which ultimately elects the new prime minister.
Ishiba follows Fumio Kishida
It is also tradition within the LDP that the party leader also becomes head of government. Ishiba follows Fumio Kishida. He announced his withdrawal in August after the LDP suffered a massive decline in popularity due to a series of scandals.
