Three-quarters of respondents are happy with the one-off deposit in retail, which will come into effect in 2025 for PET and aluminum beverage packaging. This is evident from a study by the market institute commissioned by TOMRA Collection – a company that works in the circular economy.
The older generation in particular attaches importance to the sustainability of materials. 88 percent of people over 70 think this is important, while 67 percent of 16 to 39 year olds think this is important. In line with this, nine in ten respondents are in favor of reducing packaging material. Just as many expect retailers to take initiatives to save food, for example by focusing on regional products. Furthermore, respondents tend to believe that only recyclable materials should be used in packaging.
25 cents cost per package
From the beginning of 2025, a 25 cent deposit will be charged for drinks in plastic bottles and metal cans with a capacity of 0.1 to three liters. Customers such as supermarkets and small points of sale must register from July. However, there are many special rules, such as for traditional restaurants, drinks vending machines, online retail and food delivery.
“We advise every returnee to find out now whether a special or exceptional arrangement applies to the relevant point of sale,” says Monika Fiala, co-director of Recycling Pfand Austria. For example, catering establishments in which products are only consumed on site do not have to report the deposit amount. Beverage machine operators do not have to take back the cans and bottles, but pay a compensation contribution per product.
The Deposit logo is coming
“In just under seven months, the first plastic bottles and beverage cans with the Austrian deposit logo will be found on the shelves of supermarkets and other points of sale such as vending machines, restaurants or bakeries. This is also where the obligation to take back goods begins,” said a statement from Recycling Pfand Austria.
