A bloody dispute has broken out over one of Peru’s most famous tourist attractions, with residents of several villages at the foot of Mount Vinicunca fighting to control access to the popular tourist destination.
One man was killed in the clashes, radio station RPP reported. Three other people were injured. Police have arrested at least 10 suspects.
Vinicunca, southeast of the city of Cusco in the Andes, is also called the Mountain of Seven Colors or Rainbow Mountain. The colors, which run in parallel stripes, are created by different minerals in the rock such as iron, copper and sulfur.
Who gets the entrance fees?
For years, a dispute has been simmering between various village communities over who should collect the entrance fees to the natural monument. In view of the recent escalation, the local tourist office has advised against visiting Vinicunca for the time being.
