Wanted to save e-scooter – man was hit by Railjet on train tracks

Date:

A memorable accident took place at the Götzis train station in Vorarlberg on Tuesday evening. A man tried to save his scooter, which had ended up on the tracks – and was hit by an oncoming Railjet – leaving him seriously injured.

The accident happened on Tuesday morning at 5:20 am. At the time, a 37-year-old man was at the train station in Götzis. For reasons that are still unclear, the man’s e-scooter ended up on the track. The 37-year-old wanted to save his scooter and carelessly stumbled onto the track. What the man did not notice in time: a Railjet was approaching the train station from Bregenz.

A train dispatcher saw the man’s action and tried to inform the driver. However, it was too late: despite emergency braking, the Railjet hit the 37-year-old as he was about to climb back onto the platform. He was thrown back onto the track and his scooter was dragged 150 meters by the train. As a result of the collision, the man was injured to an unspecified degree and after receiving first aid from the emergency physician, he was taken to Feldkirch State Hospital. The tracks were closed during the operation.

Stepping on the track is very dangerous
On the occasion of the incident, the ÖBB once again draws attention to the rules of conduct on the platform. It is especially important to wait until the train arrives in the protected area behind the yellow safety line. For safety reasons, the use of sports equipment on the platform is prohibited. Entering the tracks is extremely dangerous and therefore strictly prohibited. If objects fall on the track, never try to recover them yourself, but inform ÖBB staff or call the emergency number.
