There is a suspicion of sabotage at two military sites in Germany. The Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday that tap water in Cologne may be contaminated.
The German Bundeswehr air base in Cologne and the NATO base in Geilenkirchen, both in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, were hit on Wednesday. In Cologne, the barracks were closed for investigation, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry said. Ulrich Fonrobert of the Bundeswehr regional command added that “abnormal water values” were detected on Wednesday evening. A hole was then discovered in the barracks’ fencing near the water system.
So far, there have been no cases of illness. However, soldiers and other personnel have been asked “not to carry drinking water under any circumstances.”
Man prevented from entering
A suspicion of sabotage was also reported from Geilenkirchen. A man tried to enter the site on Tuesday evening, but in vain, a NATO spokesman said on Wednesday. The base was then routinely inspected, but remained operational. Both locations have their own hydroelectric power stations. In Geilenkirchen, however, there were no indications of problems with the water quality.
Background unknown
The possible background to the incident was initially not publicly known. The investigations involved the police and military police, the Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) and State Security. Experts have repeatedly warned that the military infrastructure could be the target of Russian espionage or sabotage attempts.
