Dramatic seconds for a Munich climbing couple in the Stubai Valley: a 58-year-old fell about 17 meters into the rope when a stone gave way. She survived the incident with serious hand injuries.
The couple from Munich took the Eisgratbahn of the Stubai Glacier Railway to the middle station in the morning. From there they went to the Egesengrat to climb the “Berggids” via ferrata. This is rated with a difficulty level of 5+ to 6.
It happened in the lead role
The climbing partners started the climbing route around 11:00 and took turns leading. According to her own statements, a rock broke out after the woman, a 58-year-old German, was leading and was about to secure herself at the fourth stand, and she used it as a handhold.
Hit a rock face several times
This caused her to fall about 17 meters into the rope. She touched the rock several times and suffered serious hand injuries. Her husband, a 58-year-old German, was able to prevent her from falling to the bottom.
The man let her abseil down and the mountain guide helped
The accident victim was able to be lifted to an “intermediate ledge” in the rock by her husband. She was then taken to the Dresdnerhütte by her husband, accompanied by a nearby local mountain guide who had heard the screams. The couple then took the train together into the valley. From there, after first aid, she was flown by emergency medical helicopter to the clinic in Innsbruck. Once the investigation is complete, a report will be submitted to the Innsbruck public prosecutor’s office.
