The EU and several countries signed a statement calling for “impartial and independent” verification of the results of those elections, in which the National Electoral Council declared Nicolás Maduro the winner.
The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Friday approved by consensus a resolution obliging Venezuelan authorities to publish “urgently” the minutes of the elections held in that country on July 28.
The non-binding text was presented on behalf of the United States and Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, Suriname and Uruguay as co-sponsors.
The resolution urges Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) to “urgently publish the minutes with the voting results of the presidential election at the level of each polling station“and “respect the fundamental principle of popular sovereignty through an impartial verification of the results that guarantees the transparency, credibility and legitimacy of the electoral process.”
In addition, 22 countriesincluding Spain, and the European Union They requested this Friday the “immediate publication of all the original minutes” of the July 28 elections in Venezuela and the “impartial and independent” verification of the results of those elections, in which the National Electoral Council declared Nicolás Maduro the winner.
“Any delay” in this verification, “preferably by an international entity to guarantee respect for the will of the Venezuelan people expressed in the elections,” casts doubt on the results officially published on August 2, indicates the text read by the minister. The Dominican Foreign Minister, Roberto Álvarez, at the presidential palace in Saint Dominic together with the signatories of the declaration.
