New Pack – Wolves continue to explore new areas

Date:

For the first time, wolf pups have been spotted north of Lake Walen, in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen. This is only partly positive news for Vorarlberg.

It is actually a beautiful sight: two hikers have seen no less than three wolf pups in the past few days on Gamserrugg near Werdenberg, some 20 kilometres from the border with Vorarlberg. For the first time, a pack of wolves has now settled north of Lake Walen. This comes as no surprise: the Swiss Office for Nature, Hunting and Fisheries had already communicated the presence of a wolf pair in the Werdenberg area several times this year and pointed out a possible pack formation. The next step is to determine the exact number of pups.

Distribution despite shootings
Although problem wolves have been the target of hunting in Switzerland for several months and the population has decreased by about 20 percent, the large predators are still opening up territories and forming new packs. The good news: the number of livestock deaths in the cantons of Graubünden and St. Gallen has decreased significantly compared to previous years – it is quite possible that the hunt is already having an effect on the behavior of master Isegrim.

Pack formation in the countryside soon?
For Vorarlberg, the new pack means one thing above all: the chance that even more young wolves will get lost in the countryside in search of territory has increased. And the more individuals there are, the more likely it is that a pack will form. Almost all experts agree that Vorarlberg is a poorly suited habitat for a wolf pack due to the extensive alpine agriculture.
