The immunologist and senior pandemic adviser to US President Joe Biden, Anthony Fauci, has been infected with the coronavirus. The director of the National Institute for Infectious Diseases tested positive for the virus on Wednesday, according to the senior US health authority NIH.
For decades, the scientist has been considered one of the foremost experts on infectious diseases in the United States. In the Corona crisis, he has become the face of America in the fight against the pandemic.
Only mild symptoms
The 81-year-old was fully vaccinated and given two booster injections, the authority said. He currently has only mild symptoms, is self-isolating and will continue to work from home. Fauci has not had close direct contact with the president or other senior members of the government lately.
Other several senior members of Biden’s circle — including cabinet members and close advisers and associates — had tested positive for the coronavirus in recent months. According to the government, Biden himself has not been infected so far.
