Ice formation broken – climber missing during recovery mission in Pakistan

Date:

Pakistan is currently searching for three Russian climbers who went missing on Mount Gasherbrum IV. The group was trying to recover the body of a comrade who had an accident while climbing the summit last summer.

The mountain is nearly 8,000 meters high. The Pakistani army managed to bring two of the five climbers to safety on Saturday. Two other climbers were seriously injured and would probably not survive in the coming days if they were not found, the Pakistan Alpine Club said.

Searching with helicopters
The condition and whereabouts of the fifth climber are uncertain. The army is currently deploying helicopters to search for the missing persons. According to the club, an ice formation, probably a glacier ice tower, broke off during the Russians’ climb.

Gasherbrum IV in northern Pakistan is one of the highest peaks in the world (ranked 17th). The mountain range of the same name is also home to K2, the second highest peak in the world. Every year, mountaineers set out on the dangerous path. Even in summer, there is a risk of avalanches and storms.
