It made a “bubbling sound” and the car disappeared into the water. The owner, an 81-year-old fisherman from Altheim, could only watch helplessly on Sunday morning as his Toyota Yaris sank in the Gundholling swimming lake in the Mining industry. He had gotten out briefly to close a gate, but had forgotten to pull the handbrake.
“We could still see bubbles rising in the water,” says Valentin Hebetswallner, operations manager of the Mining Fire Brigade, who was quickly on the scene with his comrades after the alarm was raised. This was a relief for the emergency services; at least they had an idea where the car could be found.
The abandoned vehicle had traveled a considerable distance before sinking. It rolled 30 meters downhill and then fell over a dike into the lake. There it drifted for another 25 meters before hitting its roof at a depth of five meters.
Divers attached lifting balloons, after which the car was pulled to shore, where a crane from the professional fire brigade AMAG from Ranshofen lifted it ashore.
Only minor damage was visible on the body of the Toyota, but the car as a whole was probably a total loss. The 81-year-old was completely devastated by his accident.
