Violent protests break out almost daily in overcrowded prisons in Italy. A prison guard was injured in riots in the southern Italian city of Bari on Saturday afternoon. The prisoners’ discontent was focused on overcrowding and poor prison conditions, among other things.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 60 prisoners have committed suicide, about 20 more than in the same period last year. In total, there are almost 60,000 prisoners in Italian prisons, 8,000 more than there are places available (see video above).
Deport foreign prisoners
Just a few days ago, the Italian Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, passed a law in parliament that aims to lighten the burden on the country’s prisons. The sentence should also be served in a different environment, such as in communities for drug addicts. In each case, a court will decide in the future.
“If we could house drug addicts in other relevant facilities and allow foreign prisoners to serve their sentences in their own countries, we would have 20,000 fewer prisoners in Italy. “That would be a solution to overcrowding,” the minister explained.
Pre-trial detention reform planned
Nordio of the ruling Fratelli d’Italia party (Brothers of Italy in German) is also currently working on reforming pre-trial detention. In some cases, other measures may follow in the future. “Of course, pre-trial detention will continue for robbers, rapists, corrupt people and other serious criminals. It is important that the conditions for the use of pre-trial detention are better defined,” the Minister of Justice said.
